Mossel Bay Club

This Mossel Bay club terrace needed outdoor spectator seating that could handle coastal weather, regular use and simple upkeep. We supplied recycled plastic lumber benches and installed them to suit the terrace layout and circulation space.

What the club needed in Mossel Bay

The client was a community sports club in Mossel Bay looking to improve its terrace seating for match days, coaching sessions and social events. The brief was practical: create fixed spectator benches that would be comfortable, neat in appearance and able to cope with salty air, winter rain and long hours in the sun.

The terrace had to remain easy to move through, with clear paths for players, officials and patrons. There was also a maintenance concern, as the club wanted a seating solution that would not need regular sanding, sealing or repainting. In a coastal town like Mossel Bay, timber can move, split and weather quickly, so the committee asked for a material that stays steadier through the seasons and is simple to wipe down after use.

Site constraints and layout decisions

We started with site measures and layout planning, checking the terrace edges, post positions and walking routes around the seating area. The platform already had a fixed footprint, so the bench arrangement had to work around existing access points and not block lines of sight to the field. Because the terrace is used by different age groups, we also made sure the spacing allowed for comfortable seating without crowding.

Coastal humidity and wind exposure were part of the brief, along with a need for durable fixings and tidy edge finishing. The client also wanted the seating to feel solid under daily use, but not heavy looking. That meant balancing component size, fixing points and the finish on the visible faces. Small details mattered here, especially where benches meet walls, steps and corners, because those areas get the most contact and wear.

  • Terrace seating had to keep walkways open
  • Materials needed to suit coastal conditions
  • Layout had to work for spectators and staff
  • Finish needed to look clean and be easy to maintain

What we supplied and installed

We supplied recycled plastic lumber for the spectator benches, selected for outdoor durability and low maintenance. The material is suited to wet conditions and does not have the same upkeep demands as conventional timber. For this project we used a straightforward bench format with weather resistant fixings and neat edge details, giving the club a practical seating line that fits the terrace without feeling bulky.

Our team handled the bench installation, component alignment and edge finishing, then checked the fit against the terrace layout before signing off. Because the club needed a clean, uniform result, we kept the bench heights and spacing consistent across the seating run. Jason Petersen managed installation coordination, while Thabo Molefe oversaw production checks and Bianca Fourie handled the project schedule and material flow. The result was tidy, durable seating that suits a busy sports venue and keeps maintenance to a minimum. It was a simple brief, but the execution had to be exact.

  • Recycled plastic lumber bench components
  • Weather resistant fixings for outdoor use
  • Consistent bench height and spacing
  • Neat edge finishing at corners and joins

Project timeline and delivery from Paarden Eiland

The project ran over a short programme of a few weeks from first site measure to final handover. After the initial visit, we confirmed the bench layout and sent through a material quote. Once approved, production was scheduled at our Paarden Eiland base in Cape Town, with logistics planned for delivery to Mossel Bay. Leanne Naidoo coordinated client updates and delivery timing, while Sibusiso Dlamini handled route planning so the materials arrived in order and on time.

For a coastal club, timing matters because events and training sessions often cannot stop for long. The installation window was organised to reduce disruption to the terrace and surrounding access routes. Once on site, our crew worked through the set-out, fixing and finish in sequence so the club could return to normal use as soon as possible. The full process was completed in 3 weeks, from measure through to installation and final checks.

Results for the club and its spectators

The finished terrace now has defined spectator seating that suits the shape of the space and stands up well to regular outdoor use. The benches give the club a cleaner presentation for match days and community gatherings, while the recycled plastic lumber helps reduce ongoing maintenance tasks. There is no need for the usual cycle of resealing and touch-up work that many outdoor timber installations require.

For the client, the practical gain is just as important as the appearance. The terrace is easier to keep clean, and the seating arrangement supports better movement along the edge of the viewing area. The club also has a material choice that fits its environmental aims without compromising day to day use. In a place like Mossel Bay, that makes a real difference over time.

  • Clearer seating layout for spectators
  • Lower routine maintenance needs
  • Better use of the terrace footprint
  • Suitable for coastal exposure and regular traffic

What we would repeat on a similar terrace

If we were doing a similar sports club project again, we would keep the same sequence: site measures first, then layout planning, then a final check on access and sight lines before installation starts. That order avoids surprises once the materials arrive. We would also allow time for edge detail decisions early, since those finishing points affect both the appearance and the day to day wear at corners and joins.

For clubs in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, George, Johannesburg or Durban, the same approach works well when the space is exposed and the seating has to last. The key is choosing the right material, keeping the layout practical, and making sure the fixing details suit the site. Done properly, a terrace bench installation can serve for years with very little fuss. That is the kind of job we like, straight forward and properly measured.

Questions we get asked

Can recycled plastic lumber work on a coastal sports terrace?

Yes. It is commonly used outdoors where moisture, sun and salt air are part of the conditions, and it is a practical option for spectator seating.

Did the Mossel Bay club need full deck replacement?

No. This project focused on terrace benches and their installation, with the layout set around the existing viewing area.

Do you handle projects outside Cape Town?

Yes. We deliver and support projects across South Africa, including Mossel Bay, George, Johannesburg and Durban.
